Aquitania secunda was one of the provinces of Gaul formed by Emperor Diocletian . It was created when the province of Gallia Aquitania was divided into three parts:

• Aquitania prima in the east with the Massif Central and the Berry
• Aquitania secunda in the west between the Gironde and the Loire , and
• Novempopulana (or Aquitania tertia) between the Garonne and the Pyrenees

All three provinces then belonged to the Praefectus praetorio Galliarum and the Dioecesis Galliae .

Aquitania secunda was inhabited by the

• Aginnenses around Aginnum ( Agen , Agenais ),
• Bituriges Vivisques around Burdigala ( Bordeaux , Bordelais ),
• Santones around Mediolanum Santonum ( Saintes , Saintonge ).
• Petrocorii around Vesunna ( Périgueux , Périgord ),
• Pictones around Lemonum ( Poitiers , Poitou ),

When the Western Roman Empire collapsed , Aquitania secunda was occupied by the Visigoths under King Eurich from 471 onwards.
