Eucarta virgo is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the owl butterflies (Noctuidae).

features

The wingspan of the moth is about 25 to 34 millimeters. The basic color is a lighter brown. A white line runs diagonally from the front to the outside and back near the base of the wings. In the outer quarter there is a slightly curved white line that runs from the front outside to the back inside and thus forms an approximate triangle with the front white line (and closed wings) and the front end of the front wings . In this triangle there are four broad, alternating brown and white zones that extend from the front edge to about the middle of the wing. The distal white zone runs parallel to the outer white line, the following brown zone is triangular, and the two zones following the base of the wings run parallel to the front white line. There is a short arrow line on the wing tips. The terms are whitish followed by reddish brown stripes. The light yellow egg has a dark base with the micropyl zone . The caterpillars are yellow with yellowish green back and side back lines. There are six yellow dots on each segment. The side lines are white and accompanied by a red line at the top. The dark brown pupa is relatively short; the wing-sheaths shimmer green.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The main distribution area of this species is southern and southeastern Europe . Since the 1990s, the species has continued to expand its range in Central and Northern Europe . In 1998 specimens were found in Saxony for the first time, and in 2001 for the first time in Brandenburg . The species is now down-to-earth in Bavaria and Saxony-Anhalt as well . Single specimens have also been found in Denmark , southern Sweden and Finland . The distribution area extends from southern Russia, Siberia, Kazakhstan, to the Russian Far East, the Korean Peninsula, northern China and Japan.

The species is native to the warm steppe , open grasslands and scrublands. In Central and Southern Europe, it also occurs in damp and cooler places, such as. B. river valleys, river banks and lake banks.

Way of life

The species flies in two generations from May to July and August to September. A third generation is formed in particularly favorable regions. The moths are nocturnal. They fly to artificial light sources and come to the bait. The caterpillars are mainly found in July and August. They live mainly on mugwort ( Artemisia vulgaris ), field mugwort ( Artemisia campestris ) and tansy ( Tanacetum vulgare ). Fibiger also list "other herbaceous plants such as Taraxacum and Mentha " as host plants. Likewise the authors Deschka and Wimmer; the species lives almost exclusively in wetlands .
