Aquitania great
Aquitania prima was one of the provinces of Gaul formed by Emperor Diocletian (reign 284–305) . It was created when the province of Gallia Aquitania was divided into three parts:

- Aquitania secunda in the west between the Gironde and the Loire , capital Burdigala ( Bordeaux ) and
- Novempopulana (or Aquitania tertia) between the Garonne and the Pyrenees , capital Elusa ( Éauze )
All three provinces then belonged to the Praefectus praetorio Galliarum and the Dioecesis Galliae .
Aquitania prima was inhabited by the

When the Western Roman Empire collapsed , Aquitania was occupied by the Visigoths under King Eurich from 471 onwards.
