Ar Men ( Breton for the rock ) is the name of a lighthouse built between 1867 and 1881 in the Atlantic Ocean near the western coast of Brittany , which marks the entrance to the Sein Passage.
Due to its isolated location far in the Atlantic and the difficult working conditions, coupled with an evacuation of the tower crew, which was sometimes impossible for weeks, it was also referred to as the "hell of hells". The work to build the Ar Men turned out to be extremely complicated, as what had just been created was often destroyed after a short time by the strong waves. The work therefore took an unusually long time at the age of 14.
The lighthouse is 33.5 m high, its fire height is 29 m. Since April 10, 1990, its signal has consisted of three white flashes every 20 seconds, accompanied by three beeps every 60 seconds.
From 1897 onwards, the fire was fired with oil. In 1903 the switch to oil vapor took place and in 1988 it was converted to electricity. In 1990 the tower was automated and has not been inhabited since.
The lighthouse is repeatedly the subject of literature, for example in the 2010 report in German by the Breton Jean-Pierre Abraham, who lived here for three years at the beginning of the 1960s. In 2018 the German comic book publisher Splitter published a graphic novel of the same name from the pen of the French illustrator Emmanuel Lepage. In this volume, the difficulties in building the Ar-Men are examined in detail and legends from Breton mythology are incorporated.
