Ara ( Catalan for 'now') is a Catalan daily newspaper that has been published since November 28, 2010 (when the elections to the Catalan Parliament were held).

The self-image of the newspaper is reflected in a founding manifesto that was signed by all partners. This is seen as a focus on digital output and social networks. Even before the first edition, a political proximity to Convergència i Unió was assumed, while Ara sees itself as cross-party and free of ideology.

Emergence

Already in July 2010 there were first indications of this newspaper. In the run-up to the first edition, the newspaper was presented at various events. The focus was on the presentation on November 4, 2010 in the Palau de la Música Catalana .

Ara was created around a year after El Punt bought the Avui newspaper (which merged to form El Punt Avui in 2011 ) and shortly after the first edition of La Vanguardia in Catalan.

The first edition of November 28, 2010 was completely sold.

Dissemination and content

In the period from July 2011 to June 2012, according to OJD Spain, the average circulation was 27,841 copies, of which 15,477 were sold. The Baròmetre de la comunicació i la cultura names a daily range of 121,000 people for Catalonia for the study period November 2011 to October 2012. The number of website visitors rose by October 2012 from an initial half to around 1.5 million visitors per month.

In a study from November 2011, the Baròmetre de la comunicació i la cultura found that ARA readers belong to the upper class and upper middle class (66%) more than other newspapers and that they consult the Internet more often than other reader groups (comparison value 77.8 % versus 59 to 64.4%)

Ara regularly publishes translations of articles in the International Herald Tribune . Until the end of 2012, Time Out Barcelona (under the name Time Out Cultura and later Time Out Cap de 7mana ) was Ara's Sunday supplement . However, Time Out will be released from January 2013 together with El Periódico de Catalunya .

expansion

On November 20, 2011 (elections to the Spanish Parliament), the distribution area was extended to the Balearic Islands and, since February 26, 2012, to the provinces of Castellón and Valencia.
