Arachnospila is a genus of the wasps (Pompilidae). There are 35 species in Europe.
features
The species of the genus Arachnospila are medium-sized to large wasps. The head and thorax are finely structured. The inner edge of the usually large compound eyes is parallel. The frontal plate ( clypeus ) is short and wide and more or less convex. Their apical edge is shortened or more or less concave. The labrum is partially or completely covered by the front plate. The mandibles are pointed and have one or two extra teeth. The metapostnotum is usually shorter than the metanotum . The finely structured propodeum is increasingly curved backwards. The wings are more or less tinted brown, their apical edge is darker. The pterostigma is small, it is less high than the cross vein 2r-rs long. The legs are thorny, a tarsal ridge is present in most species, but absent in some species. The claws are toothed. The tarsi of the front legs are asymmetrical in the males. The inner ones are shorter, curved and two-spined, the outer ones are longer with erect teeth. The antennae are shortened in both sexes, the scapus is laterally flattened in the females, in the males it is cylindrical. Both maxillary and labial palps are short. The pronotum is flattened dorsally and longer than the mesoscutum . The triangular scutellum is small. The metapostnotum is only visible from the side, dorsally it is covered by the metanotum. The propodeum is elongated and flattened dorsally. The thighs ( femora ) of the front legs are thickened in females, the tarsal limbs are shortened and have no tarsal crest. The claws are simply thorny. The spines of the rails ( tibia ) of the middle and rear legs are blackish. The wings are elongated, brownish tinted and have two submarginal cells. The fifth tarsomer of the front legs is usually elongated at the inner edge.
Way of life
The wasps predominantly colonize open habitats and forest edges. The females create their multicellular nests in existing cavities in the ground. The cells are set up before the hunt, each with its own entrance. The larvae are taken care of by spiders of the families Agelenidae , Amaurobiidae , Anyphaenidae , Clubionidae , Gnaphosidae , Lycosidae , Philodromidae , Pisauridae , Salticidae , Segestriidae and Thomisidae .
