Aragosaurus ("Lizard of Aragón") is a little-known genus of sauropod dinosaur from the Lower Cretaceous ( Upper Hauterivium to Lower Barremium ) of Spain . So far, only a fragmentary skull-less skeleton is known from the Castellar Formation in the Spanish province of Teruel . Aragosaurus wasscientifically described for the first timein 1987 by José Luis Sanz and colleagues with the only species Aragosaurus ischiaticus .

Aragosaurus is named after the autonomous Spanish region of Aragon (Spanish: Aragón). The second part of the species name, ischiaticus ( ischium - ischium ), points to the particularly large pubis crest of the ischium .

validity

Differentiating it from other genera is difficult because this genus cannot be sufficiently defined by autapomorphies (unique characteristics). Upchurch and colleagues (2004) therefore state that the validity of Aragosaurus is only provisional.

Systematics

Sanz and colleagues (1987) classify Aragosaurus as a member of the Camarasauridae . However, Upchurch and colleagues (2004) come to the conclusion that Aragosaurus must be classified as Eusauropoda incertae sedis (Eusauropod with uncertain assignment). Some other recent studies attribute Aragosaurus to the Titanosauriformes .

Find

The only findings include caudal vertebrae , chevron bones , shoulder blades , thigh bones (femur) and finger bones (phalanges) with a claw, as well as the pelvic bones ischium and pubis .
