Working group for computer applications and quantitative methods in archeology
The AG CAA - Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archeology eV is an interdisciplinary working group of archaeologists , mathematicians , computer scientists and statisticians , which annually organizes a conference, organizes "workshops" and publishes conference reports. The CAA is headed by three speakers who are elected every two years.
Goal setting
The CAA promotes archaeological research with the help of computer applications and quantitative methods. It not only offers a platform for the exchange of experiences between archaeologists who use statistical-quantitative or generally computer-aided evaluation methods, but also maintains contact with mathematicians, statisticians and computer scientists who are interested in archaeological questions. This gives archaeologists the opportunity to get to know methods from mathematics, statistics and computer science, to apply and develop them in cooperation with experts.
history
The AG was founded in 1981 under the name “Working Group on Quantitative Methods in Archeology”, which has since met annually with the antiquity associations , and later alternately with the Society for Classification (GfKl). In 2005 it was decided to change the name to the current name, since then the AG CAA has also been the German-speaking section of the international CAA (Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archeology), which was founded in 1973 in the university city of Birmingham . In addition to lecture sections, training courses on various computer applications were also offered at irregular intervals. Since 2010 the working group has been holding annual conferences at changing locations, in particular to offer students from all archaeological disciplines a forum for discussion. The conference period is either the end of January or the beginning of February. The event in Wilhelmshaven in 2019 took place off-tour at the end of September.
