Working soldier

Work soldiers were members of the military formations in the German Reich called workers' departments .

At the beginning of the 20th century, the workers' departments formed from work soldiers were in Königsberg , Magdeburg , Koblenz-Ehrenbreitstein , Mainz , Dresden and Ingolstadt . The Prussian workers' departments were subordinate to the inspector of the military penal institutions. More detailed provisions were found in the regulations for the workers' departments of August 31, 1881.

In France , working soldiers were grouped into punishment companies , in Russia there were reform companies.

In the NVA the GDR there were summarized in the units construction soldiers . However, these were conscripts who refused to use the weapon. There was no right to conscientious objection in the GDR.
