Archaeological Society in Hesse
The Archaeological Society in Hesse is the interest group and promoter of Hessian archeology and archaeological preservation based in Wiesbaden . The society is organized as a registered association and has around 1600 members (as of 2008).
history
At the beginning of the 1970s, the preservation of monuments in Hesse was in a state that made it difficult to carry out its duties. In terms of personnel and finances, Hesse came last nationwide. The simultaneous construction boom of these years led to a loss of ground monuments. The society was founded on June 20, 1979 on the initiative of the then regional archaeologist Fritz-Rudolf Herrmann in Frankfurt am Main . The founding members were mainly committed citizens from all over Hesse, some of them volunteered for archaeological work. Hans Wagner was the first president until 1991 .
Purpose and grants
The Archaeological Society sees itself as a sponsor of archaeological and palaeontological monument preservation and supports research and archeology in Hesse. She wants to help save and preserve the cultural monuments. That is why it supports scientific excavations, publications, restorations and exhibitions as well as the state preservation of monuments.
The first modest funding took place in 1982 for an excavation of a Franconian fortification on the Schiffenberg near Gießen . Between 1988 and 1997 the excavation of the small fort in Holzheimer Unterwald was funded. The important excavations on Glauberg were also supported from 1987-2000, mainly special equipment for restoration was financed. Smaller grants were available for the stone box grave of Calden in the Kassel district , the megalithic grave "Holy Stones" near Lich -Muschenheim and prospecting of a medieval village near Gründau in the Main-Kinzig district.
Since 2005 the company has acquired large parts of the area of the Roman fort in Arnsburg and will gradually shut down the area previously used for agriculture. This is primarily intended to preserve the archaeological substance of one of the last not built-up forts on the Wetterau Limes . Since 2008, non-destructive, geophysical methods have been used to prospect the fort , vicus , burial ground and a small amphitheater .
The leaflet series Archaeological Monuments in Hesse is also funded by the company.
Since 2004, the society has been carrying out training measures for interested parties and volunteers together with the State Office for Monument Preservation in Hesse , which bear the title "Honorary Office in Hesse ARCHAEOLOGY". Members have the opportunity to purchase archaeological publications from the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments at a special price and receive the special archeology issue of the journal Monument Preservation and Cultural History .
