Paul Papke

Paul Papke (born September 18, 1896 in Staffelde , Soldin district ; † February 4, 1970 in Eggersdorf , Strausberg district ) was a German politician ( USPD ; KPD ; SED ).

Paul Papke was born in 1896 as the son of a worker. After attending primary school in Staffelde from 1903 to 1911, he completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter in Briesenhorst by 1914 . From 1915 he took part in the First World War. In 1918 he deserted from the Reichswehr . In 1919 he became a member of the USPD.

In the 1920s he switched to the KPD. From 1928 to 1930 he was a member of the Reichstag for his party as a member of the constituency (Frankfurt an der Oder) . Until 1932 he worked as a KPD functionary and editor in Landsberg (Warthe) . After he was not re-elected, he left his party in a dispute in 1932. In 1933, however, he returned to the KPD.

After the National Socialist “ seizure of power ” Papke was temporarily in “ protective custody ”. In March 1933 he emigrated to Paris via Prague and Zurich . On May 7, 1935, on his return to Germany, he was arrested in Cologne and sentenced to five years in prison on October 31 of that year by the Second Senate of the People's Court for preparing a treasonous enterprise and possession of a forged passport . Initially held in Brandenburg-Görden prison , then in Luckau , Papke was again taken into "protective custody" after his release on June 1, 1940 and sent to Sachsenhausen concentration camp . Last held in a sub-camp in Berlin-Lichterfelde , Papke managed to escape when the camp was evacuated at the end of the war.

After the Second World War , Papke was appointed first district administrator in the Lebus district in 1945 . In 1946 he was dismissed from this post without explanation. After that he lived for a while as a new farmer in Müncheberg . In 1947 the state government appointed Papke, now a member of the SED, as commissioner to coordinate disaster relief after the 1947 flood of the Oderbruch . From 1948 to 1951 he was mayor of Fürstenwalde / Spree . He resigned from this position due to a serious heart disease. Most recently, Papke was director of the LPG district school in Finkenheerd until 1957 .

Paul Papke, who was married twice, died in 1970.
