Archibald Bower

Archibald Bower (born January 17, 1686 in Dundee , † September 6, 1766 in London ) was a Scottish historian who was known for his multiple religious changes.

He grew up with his parents, who were carpenters. In 1702 he was sent to a Catholic Scottish college in Douai . In Rome he entered the Jesuit order in 1710 and taught history and philosophy in the order . After a stay in various Italian cities, he resigned from the Jesuit order in 1726 and fled to England . After several meetings with Samuel Clarke and George Berkeley , he left the Catholic Church and converted to Protestantism . From 1735 to 1744 he worked for The Universal History and contributed to this 65-volume work on the history of Rome.
