The Arctowski lighthouse ( Polish latarnia morska Arctowski ) is the lighthouse of the Polish Arctowski station on King George Island in the South Shetland Islands . It stands at Shag Point near Cape Point Thomas in Admiralty Bay .

history

The Polish Antarctic station opened on February 26, 1977. The next summer the lighthouse was built and handed over to its destination on March 16, 1978. Since then he has supported the navigation of supply ships and increasingly also cruise ships through Admiralty Bay.

description

The location of the lighthouse is the basalt rock Latarnia Rock directly at Shag Point, which is about 220 meters away from the main building of the polar station. The six meter high metal tower with a diameter of 80 cm is mounted on a metal plate with a concrete foundation. It has a small gallery below the lantern, which is located under a conical, white-painted tin roof. The lighthouse was initially banded in red and white. Since its overhaul in 2006, the upper half has been painted white, the lower half red. It bears the vertical inscription "ARCTOWSKI" in black letters. Its electric lamp is powered by a generator.

The lighthouse fire has a range of eight nautical miles. Its identifier is a three-second white light followed by a six-second pause. The lighthouse is in operation day and night.
