Ardee Castle

Ardee Castle (also St. Leger's Castle , Irish Caisleán Bhaile Átha Fhirdhia ) is a Tower House in Castle Street in Ardee in Ireland's County Louth . The Tower House was built in the 15th century, served as a prison in the 17th and 18th centuries and later, until June 2006, as the district courthouse. Ardee Castle is the largest medieval tower house in the British Isles. The castle was originally built by Roger de Peppard in 1207, but not much of the original walls has survived. The building is considered a national monument .

description

The rectangular building is four stories high. Corner towers sit on the north-west and south-west corners. The main entrance was secured by a machicule on the outside and a killer hole on the inside.

The ground floor has a barrel vaulted ceiling . In the north-west tower a spiral staircase leads to the upper floors.

The building was used continuously, so most of the windows have been replaced and modernized over time, but a double-winged keel arched window has been preserved on the ground floor and three simple arched windows on the third floor, the reveals of which are sloped on the inside.

history

St. Leger's Castle was built by John St. Leger in the 15th century and it served as a fortress to defend the Pale . Over the years it has been attacked by the O'Neils and also by the English and the English King James II even used it as his headquarters before the Battle of the Boyne . In 1641 Sir Phelim O'Neil took possession of the city and set up the headquarters of the Irish Army in Tower House, but on their withdrawal English troops under the command of Sir Henry Tichborne re-established the city and castle and established a garrison; O'Neil's rearguard was defeated.
