Exterior

The Arenberg-Nordkirchener pony was between 1.30 m and 1.40 m in size. They resembled the original breeds in appearance, had good, dry feet and legs with hard hooves. Through later crossbreeding of Welsh pony and Arabian stallions , the appearance became finer and corresponded more to the modern riding pony type. The corridors were described as expansive. You should have had good jumping ability.

interior

The ponies are said to have had a lively and friendly interior and, therefore, because of their strong nerves, they were well suited as children's riding ponies .

Breeding history

In 1903, Countess Paula von Esterhazy sold the Nordkirchen estates to Duke Engelbert von Arenberg, who in 1923 began semi-wild breeding in the Nordkirchen Wildbahn , similar to that in Dülmen (in the Merfelder Bruch , home of the Dülmen wild horse ). He started breeding with Panje mares ( similar to Konik ) from Eastern Europe and Dülmener stallions. The total population comprised about 80 animals. In 1968 the herd was sold to Mr. Orthmann, who continued to breed, but now also crossbred Welsh pony stallions from Section B. As with the Dülmenern, horses were caught from the herd once a year. In 1984 the stock was dissolved and the animals were sold to new owners, primarily in North Rhine-Westphalia and Schleswig-Holstein . The breed as such came to an end and became part of various riding pony breeds. The breed is acutely threatened with extinction, with a few remaining specimens. The " Society for the Preservation of Old and Endangered Pet Breeds eV " called on breeders to look for ancestors with Arenberg-Nordkirchen ancestry in the pedigree of their ponies in order to start breeding again.
