Arent Jacobsz van der Graeff

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ridder Arent Jacobsz van der Graeff (baptized on 28. December 1557 in Delft , † 4. May 1642 ibid) comes the prestigious Regent sex of Van der Graeff . His father Jacob Arentsz was, like his grandfather Arent, a powerful city regent of Delft, and following this family tradition, Arent Jacobsz van der Graeff also became an important mayor.

He was married to Sara Bosschaert and had six (or seven) children from this marriage. His firstborn son Jonkheer Aelbrecht Arentsz became, like his father, the governing mayor and Schepen of Delft and Bewindhebber (comparable to the function of a governor ) via the Dutch East India Company (VOC). His second eldest son Jacob - Herr von Hoogeveen - was a commissioner and public prosecutor / judge at the Dutch court of justice, Hof van Holland .

Arent Jacobsz took over his father's brewery in 1584 and shortly afterwards became a member of the Delft city government. Van der Graeff subsequently became Schepen and ruling mayor of his hometown. He was also the High Councilor of Delftland and, with the consent of Moritz von Orange , was able to call himself a knight .

In 1618 he and his wife were portrayed by Michiel van Mierevelt , the two portraits now hang in Delft City Museum Prinsenhof . His coat of arms hangs together with those of important families on the facade of Oude Delft 167 , the gemeenlandshuis Delfland .
