Arga de São João is a Portuguese place and a former community ( freguesia ) in the concelho Caminha . It is located about 14 kilometers southeast of Caminha. The municipality extends from the bed of the Coura River to the heights of the Serra de Arga . The community had 61 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

The town's patron saint is John the Baptist , whose festival is celebrated annually on January 28th. The most important buildings are the Capela de S. João de Arga and the Mosteiro de S. João.

With the territorial reform of September 29, 2013 , the municipalities of Arga de São João, Arga de Baixo and Arga de Cima were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Arga (Baixo, Cima e São João) .
