Argas (from ancient Greek argas , poisonous animal) is a genus of leather ticks , the most famous representative of which is the pigeon tick ( A. reflexus ). The representatives parasitize reptiles , birds , bats , and humans are occasionally attacked.
features
Adult ticks are 5 to 10 mm in size and oval. They are yellowish to reddish-brown in color. The body is flattened and has a sharp edge, which can be seen even when the specimens are soaked. The surface is leathery and covered with fine, wart-like elevations ( mammillae ). The mouthparts are on the underside and cannot be seen from above. The claws do not have sticky rags . The opening of the stigma (peritrema) lies laterally at the level of the third pair of legs.
Life cycle
Females lay eggs in packets of 25 to 100 each in crevices and crevices. Every egg laying is preceded by a meal of blood. After one to five days, the six-legged larvae hatch and look for a host, where they suckle around the clock for about five days. Then they look for a hiding place in the area and molt to the eight-legged nymphs . The nymphs seek a host only at night and molt to a second nymph stage and finally to the adults. The entire cycle can be completed in a month. If there are no suitable hosts, it can take significantly longer. Larvae and nymphs can go without meals for months, adults up to two years.
