(39971) József is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 2 April 1998 by the Hungarian astronomers László Kiss and the Hungarian amateur astronomer Krisztián Sárneczky on Piszkéstetői Obszervatórium ( IAU code 461) in the northern Hungarian Mátra on behalf of the University of Szeged discovered has been.

The asteroid was named on November 10, 2003 after the Hungarian poet Attila József (1905–1937), who is one of the greatest poets in his home country.
