Argo Records (American music label)
The record label Argo Records was founded in December 1956 as an R&B and jazz sub-label by Chess Records . It was originally called Marterry Records , but band leader Ralph Marterie objected and the name was changed to Argo Records at short notice . The producer was Jack Tracy ; Argo's first big hit was a song by New Orleans- born Clarence "Frogman" Henry, Ain't Got No Home in 1956. Jazz musicians who released on the label included Lorez Alexandria , Bess Bonnier , Ahmad Jamal ( Ahmad Jamal Trio Volume IV , 1958), the Ramsey Lewis Trio, Sandy Mosse , Cy Touff , Billy Taylor , John Merritt Young , Shelley Moore and not least the Benny Golson Art Farmer Jazztet with his classic recordings from 1960/61. Rhythm & blues artists released on Argo included Etta James and the Dells ( Etta James Rocks the House 1964), TV Slim ("Flat Foot Sam") and Savannah Churchill . Dick LaPalm was one of the producers . In 1965 the name had to be changed to Cadet Records , as a label of the same name Argo Records had existed in Great Britain for some time.
