Arie Vermeer (born July 17, 1922 , † December 16, 2013 ) was a Dutch football player who was active in the top division for the Excelsior club from the Rotterdam district of Kralingen . With the Dutch national team he completed an international match in 1946 .

Career

Arie Vermeer, one of six children in the family, began his career as a street footballer. The young Kralinger had to contribute to the family's income at the age of 14 and had no time to join an association in addition to his work in a butcher's shop . It was not until he was 18 that he became a member of Excelsior, where he made his debut in the first team in 1942. In midfield he was agierend one of the guarantors of the climbs in the Eerste class , the then highest league in the Netherlands, in 1946 and 1952. A total of Vermeer played 14 years in the first team Excelsior, the last two years after the introduction of paid football 1954 as a semi-professional. In 1956 he ended his active career because he wanted to devote himself entirely to his own butcher shop.

National team

Arie Vermeer is one of four Excelsior players who have made it to the Dutch national team . His only assignment as a center runner in the Oranje jersey was the international match against England on November 27, 1946. It was the fourth international match for the Dutch after World War II and the second overall against the English national team. Of the veterans from the pre-war period, only team captain Bas Paauwe and striker Kick Smit were on the team. The hosts won the friendly game on Leeds Road in Huddersfield 8-2. In this match, Vermeer did not play a middle runner in the sense of the World Cup system , but in this position an offensive "playmaker", so that he was not responsible for covering the opposing center forward Tommy Lawton . Lawton stood out as a four-time goalscorer for England; the two Dutch goalscorers were Smit and Ko Bergman . With the next match against Belgium under the new coach Jesse Carver , Elftal also took over the World Cup system and won 2-1 - Vermeer was no longer involved, the new task as "stopper" took over Hennie Möring from SC Enschede with the shirt number five .

After the active career

Vermeer ran his own butcher shop for many years. He remained loyal to Excelsior and played in the club's senior team until he was 57. His plan to remain active on the team until his 60th birthday was thwarted by an injury.
