Arif Demolli (pronunciation: [aˌɾif dɛˈmoɫi] ; * May 2, 1949 in Murizaj, SFR Yugoslavia , today Kosovo ; † March 6, 2017 in Pristina ) was a Kosovar Albanian writer and journalist . He was one of the most famous modern Kosovar authors. In German-speaking countries he was best known for the translation of his novel "It was a village in Kosova: The living and the dead of my childhood" (Original: Të gjallët dhe të vdekurit e një fëmijërie ).

Arif Demolli was born on May 2, 1949 in the remote village of Murrizaj ( Serbian - Cyrillic Glogovica ) in eastern Kosovo, not far from the border with Serbia . The village is deserted today. He grew up there in an impoverished farming family and attended elementary school. He attended high school ( Shkolla e mesme ) in the Kosovar capital Pristina , and then studied Albanian language and literature at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Pristina . After graduating, he worked for the Albanian-language newspaper Bota e re and the magazine Fjala . In 1981 he was arrested in connection with the then student protests against the Yugoslav government and spent two years in prison. After he was released, he was completely banned from working and lost his civil rights. From 1990 he resumed work at Fjala and then worked for the children's magazine Pionieri . He was also the editor-in-chief of both magazines at times. In independent Kosovo he worked in the Ministry of Education in the department for teaching materials. He lived in Pristina, where he died in 2017 at the age of 68.

For his novel Të gjallët dhe të vdekurit e një fëmijërie , he was awarded the Pjetër Bogdani Prize by the Kosovar Writers' Association ( Shoqatës së Shkrimtarëve të Kosovës ) in 1993 . For the children's book Pse gjirafa ka qafë të gjatë ('Why the giraffe has a long neck') he received the Kosovar children's and young adult literature prize Vehbi Kikaj in 2004 .

The German translation of his childhood memories Të gjallët dhe të vdekurit e një fëmijërie as "It was a village in Kosova: The living and the dead of my childhood" has been published by Waldgut Verlag in German. Translator is Basil Schader. In this novel Demolli describes in a humorous way his childhood as the son of a poor farming family in the village of Murrizaj.
