Arif Məlikov

Arif Cahangir oğlu Məlikov ( Russian Ариф Джангирович Меликов Arif Dschangirowitsch Melikow ; born September 13, 1933 in Baku , Azerbaijani SSR , Soviet Union ; † May 9, 2019 in Baku, Azerbaijan ) was a Soviet and Azerbaijani composer .

Məlikov studied from 1953 to 1958 at the Baku Conservatory with Qara Qarayev . Since 1958 he has taught at this institution, from 1971 with an assistant professorship and since 1979 as a professor. In 1986 the former Soviet Union awarded him the title “ People's Artist of the USSR ”. A concert hall was named after him at Bilkent University in Ankara .

Məlikov's work is based on Azerbaijani folk music, which he combined with contemporary means of composition and traditional forms. He achieved great success with the ballet Legenda o Lyubi ( Legend of Love ), which premiered in Leningrad in 1961 . One focus of his work was orchestral works (in addition to other ballet music, he composed 8 symphonies from 1958). He also wrote numerous film scores.
