The Arihant (अरिहंत), identification: S-73, (project name: Advanced Technology Vessel ATV ) is the first self-made nuclear submarine of the Indian armed forces . It was launched on July 26, 2009 at its shipyard in Vishakhapatnam . It is also the first submarine with ballistic missiles that was put into service outside of the five UN veto / nuclear powers .

The nuclear submarine is to be armed with twelve submarine-based medium-range missiles of the type K-15 Sagarika with a range of over 700 kilometers. The Arihant was to be put into service with the Indian Navy by 2012 , but the plan could not be adhered to due to technical malfunctions.

On August 10, 2013, the reactor was brought into critical condition . After a series of weapon tests and deep-sea dives as well as other inspections, the Arihant was ready for use in early 2016 and was commissioned in August 2016 after acceptance by the Indian armed forces. In early 2018, the Indian daily The Hindu reported that the Arihant had been under repair for over ten months after a water ingress due to a hatch accidentally left open.

The Arihant class is said to have four units. Boat 2, the Arighat , was launched on November 19, 2017.
