Ariocarpus bravoanus is a species of plant in the genus Ariocarpus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet of the species honors the Mexican botanist and cactus specialist Helia Bravo Hollis .

description

Ariocarpus bravoanus grows geophytically with gray-green bodies that have a diameter of 3 to 9 centimeters and which hardly protrude from the soil surface. The flattened, triangular and somewhat pointed warts stand out only a little from the base of the shoot. The variable areoles sometimes have a woolly furrow over the entire length of the wart or are designed as a woolly cushion near the tip of the wart.

The magenta-colored flowers reach a diameter of 4 to 5 centimeters. The mostly light brown fruits are inconspicuous.

Systematics, distribution and endangerment

Ariocarpus bravoanus is widespread in the Mexican state of San Luis Potosí on limestone soils and is only known from a few localities.

The first description was in 1992 by Héctor Manuel Hernández and Edward Frederick Anderson . Nomenclatory synonyms are Ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus subsp. bravoanus (HMHern. & EFAnderson) Halda and Ariocarpus fissuratus subsp. bravoanus (HMHern. & EFAnderson) Lüthy .

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Ariocarpus bravoanus subsp. bravoanus
  • Ariocarpus bravoanus subsp. hintonii (Stuppy & NPTaylor) EFAnderson & WAFitz Maur.

Ariocarpus bravoanus is listed in Appendix I of the Washington Convention on Endangered Species . In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is it as " Vulnerable (VU) , d". H. classified endangered. The subspecies Ariocarpus bravoanus subsp. hintonii is also considered a " Vulnerable (VU) ", i. H. endangered, the subspecies Ariocarpus bravoanus subsp. bravoanus on the other hand as " Critically Endangered (CR) ", i. H. classified critically endangered.
