Aristobulus the Younger

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aristobulus the Younger was a son of Aristobulus , the son of Herod the Great and thus his grandson. He lived around the turn of the ages and died after his brother Herod Agrippa I , who died in 44 AD. While his brothers Herod Agrippa I as king of Judea (37-44 AD) and Herod as ruler of Chalcis (44-48 AD) came to power, Aristobulus remained a private man. His relationship with his brother Herodes Agrippa was clouded and he convicted him against the Roman governor Flaccus in connection with border disputes of bribery. When a statue of Caligula was to be erected in the Jerusalem temple , however, he was at the court in Tiberias in 40 and prevented the erection with his brothers by convincing the governor Publius Petronius that an uprising would break out if the order was carried out would. Aristobulus was married to Jotape , daughter of King Sampsigeramos II of Emesa . The marriage, however, was the only child of the deaf and mute Jotape.
