Francis Anthony Gomes

Francis Anthony Gomes (born April 10, 1931 in Rangamatia , † February 17, 2011 in Bangkok ) was a Bangladeshi clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of the Mymensingh diocese .

Life

Francis Anthony Gomes was born to Simon Haccha, Garo priest in Ranikhong. He was ordained a priest on May 28, 1964 and studied in Rome . He was one of the first Catholic priests from Bengal . He was pastor of Bhoborpara in the former Kushtia district. On April 17, 1971, Gomes was an eyewitness to the founding and swearing-in ceremony of the government-in-exile of Bangladesh in Baiddyanathtola in the presence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Syed Nazrul Islam and Tajuddin Ahmad , the first prime minister. Baiddyanathtola was only a five-minute walk from his parish church.

Under the military pressure of Pakistan, Gomes had to flee to Nadia in West Bengal together with the Bishop of Krishnagar , Matthew Baroi SDB . There he worked in refugee camps in Anatolia, Bahadurpur, Bhaluka, Dhuplia and Haringhata and the smaller camps in Maliapota, Domepukur, Begunpara, Betbari, Poragaccha, Ranaghat, Bongaon, Barashat, Begopara, Debgram, Madanpur and Panchpota. Together with the Missionaries of Charity , he helped with the procurement of food and medicines and with the care of children who had lost their parents in the Pakistani raids.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on May 15, 1987 first bishop of the diocese of Mymensingh , which was established on the same date . The Archbishop of Dhaka , Michael Rozario , donated him episcopal ordination on September 8 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Theotonius Gomes CSC , Bishop of Dinajpur , and Linus Nirmal Gomes SJ , Bishop of Baruipur .

On July 15, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related retirement. After his retirement, Gomes fell seriously ill: he had been paralyzed since a stroke in 2008 and suffered from the consequences of intracerebral haemorrhage . He died on February 17, 2011 while receiving treatment in Bangkok.
