Aristogeiton
Aristogeiton ( ancient Greek Ἀριστογείτων ) was one of the tyrant murderers of Athens . He came from the Demos Aphidnai and belonged to the tribe of Gephyra who immigrated to Athens .
Together with his friend Harmodios , he belonged to a group of conspirators that wanted to eliminate the Peisistratid tyranny in Athens. During the Great Panathenaic Islands of 514 BC They wanted to carry out an attack on the tyrant brothers Hippias and Hipparchus . At the place of execution, the Leokoreion as the starting point of the parade in the north-west of the agora , however, only Hipparchus was apparently present and was killed. While Harmodios fell immediately after the attack, Aristogeiton managed to escape in the turmoil. However, he was arrested soon after and died during the torture that followed. According to a report attributed to Aristotle , he only revealed the names of tyrant friends under torture and still mocked Hippias after the latter shook hands with Aristogeiton on the pretext of being able to find out more names. Thereupon Hippias personally put an end to the life of Aristogeiton.
The motives for the act were Aristogeiton's jealousy as Erastes of the younger Harmodios on Hipparchus and the denigration or defamation of the sister of Harmodios.
After the fall of tyranny and the expulsion of Hippias in 510 BC. A memorial was erected on the agora to the murderers of the tyrants , the second version of which is known from Roman copies - after the robbery of the original group committed by Xerxes .
