Ariston of Chios

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ariston of Chios was an ancient Greek philosopher . He came from Chios and was active around 250 BC. Chr.

Ariston was a student of Zeno of Kition and was one of the founders of the Stoic philosophy . The name comes from the vestibule of the Athenian agora (Greek στοά ποικίλη "painted vestibule"), which served as the first meeting place for the Stoics. Stoic philosophy is based on the belief that emotions like envy and anger arise from misjudgments. Intellectual and moral perfection was sought and identified with calmness of mind ( including apathy , autarky , ataraxia ). Eratosthenes was one of Ariston's most important students .

A peculiarity of Ariston's teaching was that he did not consider indifferent things (adiaphora), like most Stoics, at least according to their naturalness to be better or worse (prohairesis), but really regarded them as completely indifferent.
