Armand Philippon , occasionally Armand Phillipon (born August 27, 1761 in Rouen , † May 4, 1836 in Paris ) was a French Général de division .

Life

At the age of 17, Philippon entered the army on April 15, 1778 and was soon able to distinguish himself through bravery. In 1792/93 he served under the command of Generals Joseph Servan and Léonard Muller in the Armée du Nord; later he moved to the staff of General Jeannot de Moncey .

During the Napoleonic Wars on the Iberian Peninsula , Philippon was promoted to Général de division. Under the command of Marshal Nicolas Soult , Philippon fought in the Battle of Gévora (February 19, 1811) and Badajoz .

Because of his bravery, Napoleon appointed him governor of this city on March 11, 1811. During the siege of Badajoz (March 16 to April 6, 1812) he again distinguished himself, but after the fall of the city had to surrender to General William Carr Beresford's troops together with his staff . He was first taken to Lisbon as a prisoner and later sent to England. In Oswestry ( Shropshire ) he was assigned a residence corresponding to his rank. Against his word of honor he was allowed to move fairly freely; He broke this promise and was able to return to France in July 1812 with the help of smugglers.

In August 1812 Philippon was able to rejoin the Grande Armée and fought a. a. together with the generals Laurent de Gouvion Saint-Cyr and Dominique Vandamme in Bohemia . Philippon was wounded in the Battle of Kulm (August 29-30, 1813) and was taken prisoner.

During the restoration , he returned to France and now joined King Louis XVIII. on. With effect from January 15, 1814, he left the army and retired into private life. Armand Philippon died on May 4, 1836 in Paris at the age of 74 and was buried there.
