Armand de Sillègue d'Athos d'Autevielle , called Athos (* 1615 in Athos-Aspis ( Béarn ), † December 21, 1645 in Paris ) was a musketeer in the Compagnie du Roi (King's Company - 1st Company) of the Mousquetaires de la garde of King Louis XIII.

He inspired Gatien de Courtilz de Sandras and then Alexandre Dumas to his fictional character of "Athos", also "comte de la Fère", in his novel The Three Musketeers .

Life

Athos derived its name from the small Athos-Aspis castle , the remains of which can be found on the Gave d'Oloron , between Sauveterre-de-Béarn and Autevielle . He was a younger son of Adrien de Sillègue, seigneur d'Athos et d'Auteville, a position in which he could not hope for an inheritance from the Seigneuries d'Athos and d'Autevielle. Like so many others, he was left with only the military or the clergy. A second cousin, Monsieur de Tréville , was able to place him (as well as Porthos ) first as a cadet in the Régiment des Gardes françaises and in 1640 with the Musketeers of the Guard .

Not much is known about his life, only that he came from Béarn as a youth and that he was probably killed in a duel on December 21, 1645 at a young age , as recorded in the death register of the Church of Saint-Sulpice in Paris .

Convoy, service et enterrement du deffunct Armand, Athos d'Autebielle mousquetaire de la garde du Roy, gentilhomme de Béarn, pris proche la halle du Pré au Clercs.

"Escort, service and funeral of Armand Athos d'Autebielle, musketeer of the Garde du Roy, noble lord from the Béarn, who died near the hall of the Pré au Clercs"

The Pré au Clercs was known as a dueling site, so it is understandable that he was killed at this point.

Nothing is known about the burial place .
