Live and act

Armin B. Cremers studied mathematics at the University of Karlsruhe and joined the Corps Friso-Cheruskia Karlsruhe . After receiving his diploma (1971) and his doctorate (1972), he qualified as a professor for computer science in Karlsruhe in 1974. In 1973 he accepted an invitation from Seymour Ginsburg to the University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles , where he worked as an assistant professor until 1976. With Ginsburg he developed Grammar Forms, a new formalism for grammatical families. In 1976 he returned to Germany and was appointed to the chair for information systems at the University of Dortmund , which he held until 1990. At the same time, he continued to work as a visiting professor at USC, where he led the Data Spaces: Theory and Applications project together with Thomas N. Hibbard.

At the University of Dortmund, Cremers was Dean of the Department of Computer Science and, since the beginning of 1985, Vice-Rector for Research and in this position was also responsible for the development of the Technology Center Dortmund . He was the initiator and spokesman for the Center for Expert Systems in Dortmund and the NRW Research Association for Artificial Intelligence. He declined an offer to return to Los Angeles. From 1988 to 1996 Cremers was a member of the supervisory board of the Society for Mathematics and Data Processing (GMD).

Since 1990 he has been a professor of computer science at the University of Bonn. From Bonn he made fundamental contributions to artificial intelligence and robotics (with Wolfram Burgard , Dieter Fox and Sebastian Thrun ) as well as to the development of software engineering, especially in construction, and information systems, especially in geosciences. Together with Matthias Jarke , he founded the Bonn-Aachen International Center for Information Technology (B-IT) in 2002 and headed it as Scientific Director at the University of Bonn until July 2014. From 2004 to 2008 Cremers was Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and from April 2009 until July 2014 Vice Rector for Planning and Finance. He is a member of several boards of trustees and advisory boards as well as chairman of the university council of the University of Koblenz-Landau .
