Armin Bunde (born July 4, 1947 ) is a German theoretical physicist.

Life

Bunde studied physics at the University of Gießen and the University of Stuttgart and received his doctorate in 1974 under Walter Biem . In 1982 he completed his habilitation at the University of Konstanz and then received a Heisenberg grant (from 1984 to 1987) in Boston and Tel Aviv, among others. In 1987 he became a professor at the University of Hamburg . Since 1993 he has been a professor at the University of Giessen.

Bunde dealt with fractals , percolation theory , polymer physics , time series analysis , disordered systems, localization, mesoscopic systems and nanocrystalline materials, quantum billiards and ion glasses. He worked closely with Shlomo Havlin , among others .

Together with Havlin and others, he analyzed temperature fluctuations in the atmosphere and thus criticized common global climate models in 2002 because they do not reproduce the observed scaling behavior (which shows a power law and a steady state behavior of the climate). When examining climate data, he found signs of persistence behavior in the long-term correlations, for example in the sequence of extreme events such as particularly high Nile floods. After previously having a skeptical attitude towards predictions of global warming, he changed his mind in 2006. In 2009, together with Sabine Lennartz, he gave upper and lower limit values for the anthropogenic share of global warming.

Together with Jürgen Caro , Gero Vogl and Jörg Kärger , Bunde was awarded the literature prize in 2019 by the Fonds der Chemischen Industrie for the book Diffusive Spreading in Nature, Technology and Society .
