Jürgen Caro (born December 27, 1951 in Burgstädt / Sa.) Is a German chemist .

Live and act

Caro studied chemistry at the University of Leipzig from 1970 to 1974 . His doctoral thesis on Dr. rer. nat on diffusion in zeolites he carried out from 1975 to 1977 at the Institute for Physics at Leipzig University under the direction of Jörg Kärger . From 1977 Caro worked at the Central Institute for Physical Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences (AdW) of the GDR in Berlin-Adlershof in the fields of adsorption and catalysis with nanoporous materials in various functions, most recently as deputy director. In 1989 Caro acquired the title of Dr. sc. nat. with a thesis on the influence of mass transport in zeolite catalysts.

After all employees of the GDR's AdW were dismissed without notice on December 31, 1991, Caro founded the research group “Nano-Composite”. In 1994, this group became the nucleus of the “Functional Materials” department of the newly founded Institute for Applied Chemistry Berlin-Adlershof (ACA) . Under the direction of Manfred Baerns , Caro worked at the ACA as one of the deputy directors with the "Reaction Technology and New Materials" division. In 1992 Caro qualified as a Dr. rer. nat. habil. at the University of Leipzig with a topic on adsorption and catalysis in nanoporous materials.

In 2001 Caro was appointed full professor for physical chemistry at the University of Hanover, which later became Leibniz University of Hanover . His predecessors in the chair were Gerhard Ertl and Hermann Schmalzried . In Hanover, Caro focused his research activities on separating membranes and their use in catalytic membrane reactors. In this area, Caro was a partner in numerous European community research projects in the 7th Framework Program such as CARENA, NASA-OTM, NEXT-GTL, M4CO2 and co-founder of the Network of Excellence NoE INSIDE PORES, which later became the ENMIX, the European Nanoporous Materials Institute of Excellence emerged.

Caro's cooperation with China is pronounced. Caro was and is the host of numerous Chinese Humboldt Research Fellows (Haihui Wang, Yanshuo Li, Yi Liu, Yanying Wei, Hongwei Fan) and PostDocs (Aisheng Huang). Caro supervised numerous Chinese doctoral students (Heqing Jiang, Zhengwen Cao, Nanyi Wang, Fangyi Liang). Caro held the following professorships in China: 2013–16: Visiting professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in Ningbo, 2014–2017 visiting professor at Dalian University of Technology and Panjin University, since 2018 full professor at the South China University of Technology, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. In 2015, Caro and his Chinese partner Prof. Haihui Wang founded the Sino-German Joint Lab of Inorganic Membranes in Hanover and Guangzhou (Canton).

In 2013, Caro received the Breck Award from the International Zeolite Association (IZA) together with Michael Tsapatsis (Univ. Of Minnesota).

In 2013 Caro was awarded the Ostwald Medal of the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig.

In 2016 Caro was elected as a corresponding member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig, mathematics and science class.

Caro has been chairman of the GDCh local association in Hanover since 2016 .

In 2019, together with co-authors Armin Bunde , Jörg Kärger and Gero Vogl , he was awarded the literary prize of the Fonds der Chemischen Industrie for the book “Diffusive Spreading in Nature, Technology and Society” .

Caro is the author of 380 publications, 10 book chapters, 43 patents and patent applications. 17,500 citations (8,850 since 2014), h-factor 70 (46 after 2014), i10-index 242 (of which 165 after 2014) (as of October 2019).
