Armin Giere

Armin Giere (born June 24, 1936 ; † August 2017 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German basketball official and coach. He was considered a formative personality in the development of basketball in Hesse .

Life

Giere came to basketball in the 1950s and was a member of Eintracht Frankfurt's basketball department for more than 60 years . From 1976 to 1984 he was chairman of the Eintracht basketball department. In recognition of his many years of voluntary work, Giere was made an honorary member of Eintracht Frankfurt. He was active as a player, as a coach he led Eintracht's female A-youth to the German championship title in 1966. In the game year 1978/79 and from 1980 to 1983 he was the coach of Eintracht's men's team, including 1978/79 and 1980/81 in the 2nd basketball division .

At the Hessian Basketball Association (HBV) he worked as a lawyer from 1961, later he was also school sports officer, youth warden and sports warden at HBV. From 1974 to 2015 Giere was chairman of the basketball district in Frankfurt. In 1977 Giere was awarded the Golden Merit Pin by the HBV and the Golden Merit Pin in 1984.

In September 2006 he was honored by the German Basketball Association (DBB) for his many years of activity in basketball.

He died at the end of August 2017 at the age of 81. In an obituary by HBV chairman Michael Rüspeler, Giere was described as a “personality who has shaped basketball in Hesse like no other in the past decades”.
