Armstrong Tower (also: Alpine Tower) is an approximately 130 meter high lattice tower in Alpine in the US state of New Jersey . It was during the first experiments with FM radio by Edwin Howard Armstrong built in 1938 and used.
After the destruction of the World Trade Center in 2001, a number of New York television stations switched to the Armstrong Tower as the location for their transmission systems. The good accessibility of the facility, from which one can overlook large parts of New York, was advantageous for this use. However, the location soon proved unsuitable for permanent use, as the skyscrapers that had been added since 1938 dampened the signals too much in several New York districts. Today the tower is mainly used for radio relay systems .
