politics

Þóra announced her candidacy for the 2012 presidential election in Iceland in spring 2012 and was temporarily ahead of incumbent Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson in polls . Ultimately, however, he was re-elected with 52.8 percent of the vote; Þóra achieved 33.2 percent in second place.

She is in favor of a referendum on Iceland's accession to the EU . She is more critical of referendums than Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, who repeatedly resorted to this method during his presidency to allow the people to legitimize laws passed by the Icelandic parliament Althing . In Þóra's opinion, such votes increase the distance between the people and parliament.
