Arna Sigríður Albertsdóttir (born June 8, 1990 in Ísafjörður ) is an Icelandic handbiker . Regardless of her disability, she is the first female cyclist in her country to compete in UCI World Championships of any kind.

Athletic career

Arna Sigríður has been paraplegic since a skiing accident on December 30, 2006 in Geilo, Norway and is in a wheelchair (as the only resident of her home town Ísafjörður). She initially wanted to practice swimming as a sport, but this turned out to be impractical because the swimming pools that were accessible were not barrier-free . She researched the internet and came across handbiking. As there were no handbikes for sale in Iceland, she had to order one from abroad. She became the only sportswoman in her country who does handbiking in terms of performance; there are now other handbikers who have been inspired by her.

In 2015 Arna Sigríður started training. She mostly trains indoors. Sometimes she drives on the runway at the local airport where her father works and where there are only two to three flights a day.

In the same year Arna Sigríður started at the Paracycling road world championships in Nottwil in class H3; the Iceland Cycling Federation (Hjólreiðasamband Íslands) only became a provisional member of the UCI World Cycling Federation at that time . She was the first athlete in her country to be licensed by the UCI and to take part in the UCI World Championships. She was 14th in the time trial and 13th in the road race, making her last. In 2018 she finished seventh in the road race and eighth in the time trial and was then tenth in the world rankings. In the meantime, with the help of sponsors, she has had the opportunity to take part in training camps in warmer regions such as Mallorca or Lanzarote ; she now lives in Reykjavík and is looked after by a personal trainer (as of 2019). Your goal is to participate in the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo .

Arna Sigríður continues to ski on the monoski bob .
