Arndt Pfützner (* 1949 in Geising ) is a German sports scientist .

Life

Pfützner studied at the German University of Physical Culture (DHfK) in Leipzig until 1974 and graduated with a diploma thesis on the subject of "The development of physical properties through several years of special training and their relationship to competitive performance, examined on young cross-country skiers". He then worked at the Research Institute for Physical Culture and Sport  (FKS). He submitted his doctoral thesis (title: "On the importance and methodical design of discipline-specific strength training in cross-country skiing") at DHfK in 1980, and in 1990 he completed his doctorate B(Title: "On fundamental problems of increasing the efficiency of the GDR preparation system in cross-country skiing: a contribution to a development concept aimed at world top performance"). During his time at the FKS, Pfützner dealt intensively with training and competition in cross-country skiing and also with other endurance sports.

After the end of the German Democratic Republic and the dissolution of the FKS, Pfützner worked in its successor organization, the Institute for Applied Training Science (IAT). Among other things, Pfützner worked at the IAT on aspects of triathlon, continued his research at the FKS and continued to focus on cross-country skiing and, based on the analysis of Olympic Games, dealt with development trends in competitive sports across all sports. He took over the position of head of the IAT in 2000. In spring 2015 he left office after 15 years as head of the institute.

Together with Georg Neumann and Kuno Hottenrott he published "The Big Book of Triathlon", in collaboration with Neumann and Anneliese Berbalk he  brought out the work "Optimized Endurance Training", which was also published in several editions.

Between 1990 and 1999 he held the honorary position of competitive sportsman on the board of the German Triathlon Union (DTU) and was Vice President of the German Triathlon Union from 2014 to November 2018.
