Arnold Freymuth Society

The Arnold Freymuth Society (AFG) is a nationwide association for civil courage founded in Hamm in 1992 . It is reminiscent of the intrepid democrat and judge Arnold Freymuth (1872–1933).

history

The establishment was a reaction to the right-wing extremist arson attacks in Mölln , Solingen and Hoyerswerda at the time . The xenophobic crimes awakened the insight, "how much looking the other way is moral failure", is in the online self-presentation. The society has over 120 people across Germany, mostly lawyers and historians .

Arnold Freymuth Prize

The society is dedicated to contemporary legal history and awards the Arnold Freymuth Prize every two years to people who have shown moral courage and thus rendered outstanding services to the democratic constitutional state. Particular importance is attached to the statement that one learned decisively from the Weimar Republic .

Previous winners have been Diether Posser (1994), Otto Gritschneder and Wolfgang Ullmann (1996), Burkhard Hirsch (1998), Theo Rasehorn and Barbara Just-Dahlmann (2000) and Margot von Renesse (2002), Hildegard Hamm-Brücher and Heinrich Hannover ( 2004), Heribert Prantl (2006), Seyran Ates (2008), Spiros Simitis (2010), Gerhart Baum and Bernd Wagner (2012), Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger (2014), Reinhard Strecker (2016), Christian Ströbele (2018).
