Arnold Meijer

Arnoldus Jozephus (Arnold) Meijer (born May 5, 1905 in Haarlemmermeer , † June 17, 1965 in Oisterwijk ) was a Dutch politician .

Life

Meijer initially studied theology to become a Catholic priest , but finished when he was a subdeacon and became interested in journalism . In the years 1933-1934 he was the propaganda leader of the Algemeene Nederlandsche Fascisten Bond (General Dutch Fascist League) for North Brabant and Zeeland . In May 1934 he founded the right-wing, anti-Semitic and anti-capitalist Zwart Front (Black Front). The members came partly from the ANFB and the party aimed primarily at Catholic voters and medium-sized businesses. After the condemnation of the Zwart Front by Roman Catholic bishops, who called for loyalty to the Queen, democracy and the Roman Catholic State Party, the number of Catholic voters on the Zwart Front quickly decreased, and for this reason large parts of its supporters broke away.

Arnold Meijer felt more attracted to Italian fascism than to German National Socialism , although his initially harsh anti-Semitism had similarities with National Socialism. In this context it is striking that Meijer criticized the persecution of the Jews in the German Reich on behalf of the Zwart Front and condemned the persecution of the Jews in a letter to Adolf Hitler .
