Joseph Helfert
Joseph Helfert (born October 28, 1791 in plan , † September 9, 1847 in Jungbunzlau ) was a Bohemian legal scholar and ethnographer. He is considered one of the founders of monument conservation in Bohemia and is the father of the politician Joseph Alexander von Helfert .
Life
Helfert was the second eldest son of a master white tanner in Plan and grew up in modest circumstances. He came from a family who immigrated from Bavaria in the 18th century and had extensive branches in Bohemia. With the support of his teachers, Helfert was able to attend the lower grammar school in Eger . In 1807 he started studying philosophy at the Charles University in Prague . Then worked as a steward Helfert with a notary in Warnsdorf to a study of the law to finance. After graduation, he took on various positions as an educator and legal intern. In 1814 Helfert was in the service of the Fürstenberg resident in Bohemia and court councilor, Michael Ebert.
He then moved to Vienna, where he was appointed as a substitute for Roman and Canon Law at the University of Vienna by Professor Thomas Dolliner before completing his doctorate . On July 20, 1817, Helfert received his doctorate in Vienna. iur. and on October 31, 1818, was appointed to the chair of Austrian private law at the University of Olomouc . Until March 1819, Helfert continued to work for Dolliner's supplements in Vienna and began teaching in Olomouc in April 1819. There he married Nina, née Schreiner, on September 21, 1819. In 1820 he followed a call as professor of Roman and Canon Law at Charles University in Prague. In 1824, Helfert, as a real prince-archbishop consistorial councilor, also took on management tasks for the Archdiocese of Prague . Helfert founded the magazine for the Catholic clergy in 1828 together with Karel Vinařický . Helfert held the chair in Prague until his death. He died of a stroke in 1847 on his return journey from Marienbad in Jungbunzlau.
Since his student days, Helfert has often traveled to Bohemia and made drawings of historical monuments. In 1806 he created his drawing of Elbogen Castle .
