Arnold Nipper

Arnold Nipper (born September 21, 1958 in Essen / Oldenburg , Cloppenburg district ) is a German Internet pioneer and one of the founders of the Frankfurt Internet hub DE-CIX .

Life

From 1977 to 1979 Nipper was an air traffic control radar mechanic assistant in the German Armed Forces. He then studied mathematics, physics and computer science at the Universities of Heidelberg and Mannheim from 1979 to 1988 and graduated as a mathematician.

Professional Activities

From 1989 to 1993 he was a research assistant at the University of Karlsruhe and worked at Werner Zorn's chair .

In August 1989 he set up the first internet connection at the University of Karlsruhe and played a key role in the development of the German science network WiN-IP. In 1995 he founded in Frankfurt am Main "what became the centerpiece of the global Internet infrastructure: DE-CIX , the world's largest Internet node." By 2015, he was technical director (COO and CTO) DE-CIX Management GmbH.

From 1994 to 2000 Arnold Nipper was the technical director of Xlink Internet Service GmbH. Xlink was one of the first German Internet providers. After the takeover of Xlink by the Dutch KPN in 1999, Xlink was renamed KPNQwest Germany GmbH.

Arnold Nipper is also a board member of the Association of European Internet Hubs (Euro-IX). He is also one of the founding fathers and a board member of the Internet Exchange Federation.

Arnold Nipper was one of the founders of the Réseaux IP Européens ( RIPE ). As chairman of the German Network Information Center (IV-DENIC), a predecessor organization of DENIC , Nipper played an important role in the operation of the first name server for the de-Domain.

Since January 2013 Arnold Nipper has been appointed to the advisory board “Young Digital Economy” by the BMWi .
