The arriva GmbH is a private postal company based in Freiburg , which in September 2000 as a joint venture by the Badische Verlag and the Südkurier media company founded and got on 7 March 2001 granted the license for the mail delivery in Germany by the regulator. Since then arriva has specialized in the delivery of standard items as well as bulk items with the same content. In 2014, parcel shipping was added as an additional service.

By delivering more than 70 million items, the company generated annual sales of around 33.6 million euros in 2018, making it one of the largest private mail service providers in Baden-Württemberg. Arriva employs around 320 people in administration, production, sorting and shipping (as of 2018). Most deliveries are made in the southern Baden area and are handled by a sister company with around 2000 employees. In the rest of Germany, delivery is carried out by other private postal companies from the Mail Alliance . In rare cases, delivery is also given to Deutsche Post AG . Arriva cooperates internationally with Asendia .

history

Badische Verlag and Südkurier founded the joint venture arriva in September 2000 with the intention of competing with Deutsche Post in the south-west of Germany. Initially, the private postal company concentrated on business customers and offered letters between 15 and 35% cheaper than Deutsche Post. In 2005 the company entered the private customer business.

In summer 2009, the Dutch TNT Post (later renamed Postcon ) acquired a minority stake of 25.1% in arriva GmbH. Thanks to the cooperation, arriva was able to use the TNT delivery network and thus improve its national mail delivery. In 2010 arriva also joined the Mail Alliance. This step was intended to further increase the competitive pressure on Deutsche Post and, at the same time, to expand cooperation with other private postal companies in Germany.

Due to the steady increase in shipping volumes and the expansion of the delivery area to the north, arriva opened another sorting center in Ettlingen near Karlsruhe in 2011 in addition to the two existing sorting centers in Freiburg and Singen . Arriva started shipping parcels in 2014.

In mid-2019, the previous shareholder Postcon returned its shares to the two other shareholders in equal parts. At the end of the same year, Arriva announced its withdrawal to the southern postal routing regions and gave up the sorting center in Ettlingen, which opened in 2011, with around 60 employees.
