Arrojadoa penicillata is a species of plant in the genus Arrojadoa in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet penicillata is derived from the Latin word penicillatus for 'like an artist's brush' and refers to the terminal cephalium of the species.


Arrojadoa penicillata grows shrubby, is richly branched and reaches heights of growth of up to 2 meters. The roots are not bulbous or rhizome-like . The very slender shoots have a diameter of 1 to 1.5 centimeters. The 10 to 12  ribs are low, the areoles small and close together. 1 to 3 strong, stiff central spines 1 to 3 centimeters long and 8 to 12 short, very fine radial spines arise from the areoles . The cephalium consists of white wool and long, brown bristles.

The purple or dark pink flowers are up to 3 centimeters long and often appear in groups of 6 to 12 flowers. The spherical fruits are red and reach a diameter of 1.5 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Arrojadoa penicillata is common in the Brazilian state of Bahia .

It was first described as Cereus penicillatus in 1908 by Robert Louis August Maximilian Gürke . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose put the species in 1920 to the genus Arrojadoa .

Another nomenclature synonym is Cephalocereus penicillatus (Gürke) Werderm. (1933).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
