Arsenios Balaban (secular name Mark ; † 1569 , Poland-Lithuania ) was Orthodox Bishop of Lwów (1549–1569).

Life

Arsenios Balaban was appointed Bishop of Lwów by King Sigismund I in December 1548 and introduced in 1549, against the resistance of the city's Catholic Archbishop . In November 1549 the patronage of the Assumption Monastery in Uniejów and the Onuphrios Monastery in Lwów was withdrawn from him due to rude and unworthy behavior , whereby all rights to these monasteries passed to the Brotherhood of Lwów . In the period that followed, he attempted armed attacks to regain rights. Metropolitan Makarios of Kiev decided in 1555 in favor of the Brotherhood.

In 1566 he had his son Gedeon installed as his successor as bishop, but still officiated himself until his death in 1569.

Arsenios Balaban is considered to be the progenitor of the noble family Balaban , from which several Orthodox clergy in Poland-Lithuania emerged in the 16th and 17th centuries.
