Kind of Hirahara

Art Hirahara (born 1971 in San Francisco ) is a Japanese -born American jazz pianist and composer of modern jazz . He is also a music producer .

Life

Hirahara studied music at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and the California Institute of the Arts . He moved to New York City from the San Francisco Bay Area in 2003 and has been part of the New York jazz music scene ever since.

The pianist's debut album as a leader, Edge of This Earth , was released in 2000. Posi-Tone Records released his second album in 2011 as a bandleader. Noble Path was recorded in trio with Yoshi Waki on bass and Dan Aran on drums. His third album, Libations & Meditations , was released in 2015 on the same label. The musicians Linda Oh (bass) and John Davis (drums) were involved in the trio . He also worked on Fred Ho's 2006 production Deadly She-Wolf Assassin at Armageddon! / Momma's Song .

Hirahara lives in Brooklyn . He tours Japan frequently.

style

According to music critic Nate Chinen of the New York Times , Hirahara brings a wide range of skills to his albums: electronic composition techniques, West African rhythms, echoes of Balinese gamelan music and various strands of the avant-garde .
