Arthur Aeschlimann

Arthur Aeschlimann (born September 18, 1946 ) is a Swiss lawyer . From 1992 to 2008 he was a judge at the Swiss Federal Supreme Court , which he presided over from 2007 and 2008. He is a member of the FDP and lives in Bern .

Professional career

Aeschlimann studied at the University of Bern . In 1974 he passed his state examination as advocate for the Canton of Bern . From 1974 to 1976 Aeschlimann was assistant for commercial and civil procedure law at the University of Bern. From 1976 to 1980 he was chamber clerk at the administrative court of the canton of Bern. In October 1980 Arthur Aeschlimann became a full-time judge of the Administrative Court and from 1987 to 1989 he was its President. From 1990 to 1992 Aeschlimann was President of the Administrative Law Department of the Administrative Court . On March 18, 1992, he was elected a federal judge by the United Federal Assembly on the proposal of the Free Democratic Party of Switzerland . He took up office on August 1, 1992 as a member of the I. Public Law Department. In 2007 and 2008, Aeschlimann was President of the Federal Supreme Court and thus the highest Swiss judge. He retired on December 31, 2008. The successor in the presidium was Lorenz Meyer .
