Arthur Anthony Macdonell (born May 11, 1854 in Muzaffarpur , Bihar , India, † December 28, 1930 ) was a British Sanskritist .

Macdonell was born in India and trained at the University of Göttingen , then he enrolled at Corpus Christi College in 1876 , won a classic scholarship ( Exhibition ) and three scholarships (for German , Sanskrit and Chinese ). He graduated with special classical awards in 1880 and was appointed Taylorian Teacher of German at Oxford. In 1883 he received his doctorate from the University of Leipzig and in 1888 became Deputy Professor for Sanskrit in Oxford and in 1899 soil professor for Sanskrit. In 1919 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Macdonell edited various Sanskrit texts, wrote a grammar, wrote a dictionary, published a work on Vedic mythology and wrote a history of Sanskrit. He also translated hymns from the Rig Veda . His "Vedic Reader for Students" has been reissued until recently. He is considered to be one of the best experts on the Vedic language .
