Arthur Cohen (politician)

Arthur Cohen KC (born November 18, 1830 , † November 3, 1914 ) was an English lawyer and politician ( Liberal Party ).

He grew up in Frankfurt am Main, studied first at University College London and then at Magdalene College of the University of Cambridge . In 1872 he represented England's interests in the Alabama question in an arbitration process in Geneva in connection with the Alabama and other ships which carried out pirate voyages for the Confederate States of America .

He was crown attorney from 1874 and was also active in Jewish community affairs. As the successor to his uncle Moses Montefiore , he was chairman of the Board of Deputies of British Jews until 1894, when he resigned from this office. From 1880 to 1888 he represented the electoral district of Southwark in the House of Commons as a member of the Liberal Party .
